What we promise you
Wapping Street is built for people who have been on the internet long enough to be wary of it, and who are right to be.
This page says plainly what this site does, what it will never do, and how to tell a real message from us apart from one pretending to be.
Nobody is buying your attention here
There is no advertising company involved in this site. Nothing you see is chosen by anyone who paid to put it there, and nothing is arranged to keep you here longer.
Some boards have supporters — a local business helping pay the bills. When there is one, it is on a page of its own, put there by hand by somebody who runs the board, and it says plainly whether they paid or were simply recommended. You can read that here.
Nothing on this site watches you. No part of any page is loaded from another company’s computer, so nobody else can see that you were here or what you read. Nothing about you is sold or passed on. The only thing kept in your browser is what keeps you signed in.
How to know an email is really from us
This is worth reading properly. Older people are targeted by these messages more than anyone else, and the best protection is knowing what a genuine one looks like.
Email from this board always comes from no-reply@musketeermemories.com. Anything from a different address is not us, however much it looks like it.
We only ever send you five kinds of message:
- A link and a code to sign in, when you have just asked for one
- An invitation, if a moderator invited you
- A note that somebody replied to you
- A reply from a moderator, if you asked them for help
- A message from a moderator to everybody, when there is something the board needs to know
The note about replies and the message to everybody can both be stopped, from your profile, whenever you like. The other three are answers to something you did, and one of them is how you get back in, so those keep coming.
We will never ask you for any of this
- Your password — not by email, not on the telephone, never
- A card number, a bank detail, or any payment at all
- To “confirm”, “verify” or “reactivate” your account
- To ring a telephone number
- To open a file attached to a message
If a message claiming to be from Wapping Street asks for any of those, it is not from us. You do not need to reply to it, and nothing bad happens if you ignore it.
Every link we send goes to musketeermemories.com. If you are unsure about a link, do not press it — type that address into your browser yourself and sign in from there. It always works, and it is always safe.
Who can see your email address
Ordinary members cannot see it. Not on your profile, not beside anything you write, not anywhere on this site.
The moderators and administrators of Wapping Street can. They are the people who decide who comes in, sort it out when somebody cannot sign in, and write to the board when there is something to say — none of which can be done without knowing how to reach you.
That is the whole list. Nobody else who runs a board here, nobody on another board, and nobody outside this site at all: we never sell it, never pass it on, and never put it in a message to anybody else.
You gave it to the board, not to the people on it.
Every message we send goes to one person at a time, so nobody ever sees anybody else’s address in one — not even a message written to the whole board.
Your details stay yours
Photographs you post have the hidden location tag removed before anybody else sees them, so a picture of your house is not also its address.
Emails about replies carry a button that stops them, and you can stop those — or the messages sent to the whole board — from your profile at any time, without asking anybody.
Built to be read
Most websites are designed for people in their thirties with good eyes. This one is not.
- The writing is large to begin with. If you have already told your computer or your iPad to use bigger text, this site uses yours rather than overriding it.
- The lettering was made for people with poor sight. It is a typeface commissioned by the Braille Institute, drawn so that a capital I, a lower-case l and a number 1 cannot be mistaken for each other.
- Text is full strength, always. Nothing is faded to look elegant. If a sentence is not worth reading properly, we take it out instead.
- Buttons are large, and nothing is hidden until you hover a mouse over it — which is no use at all on a tablet.
- Pages end. Nothing scrolls on forever. You can finish reading something and know that you finished it.
- You can undo. Almost nothing here is permanent, and we would rather let you change your mind than ask “are you sure?” every time — which only teaches people to press yes without reading.
These are not intentions. They are checked automatically every time anything on this site is changed, and a change that breaks one of them does not get published.
If anything here seems wrong
Tell a moderator. If something on this site looks misleading, or you got a message you are unsure about, they would far rather hear about it than not.
If you cannot sign in to tell them, there is a form here that reaches them without needing to sign in at all.
