Terms of use

These are the rules for using Wapping Street. They are written plainly on purpose. If anything here is unclear, ask a moderator rather than guessing.

What this is

Wapping Street is a private message board for people who were at the same school. It exists so those people can share memories, photographs and stories with each other.

It is not run by, endorsed by, or affiliated with any school, university, parish or diocese. Any names, marks or images that appear here belong to their owners and are used only to say which school the board is about.

Joining

Anyone may ask to join. A moderator reads every request and decides. They do not have to give a reason, and being turned down is not an accusation.

You must give a real email address, because it is how you sign in. You do not have to use your legal name.

One account per person. Do not sign in as somebody else, and do not let somebody else sign in as you.

What you post stays yours

You keep ownership of everything you write and every photograph you upload. Nothing here transfers ownership to us.

By posting, you give Wapping Street permission to store your posts and show them to other members of this board. That permission lasts as long as the post is here, and ends when it is removed.

We will not sell what you post, and we will not show it to advertisers.

Only post what is yours to post

Upload photographs you took, or that you have the right to share. Somebody else’s photograph is theirs, even if it is a picture of you.

Old photographs often show people who are not members here and never agreed to anything. Use your judgement. If someone asks to have a picture of themselves removed, a moderator will remove it, and you should expect that to happen without an argument.

Do not post anything that would embarrass someone who is no longer here to object.

How to behave

Be civil. Disagree with what somebody said rather than with who they are.

Do not post anything unlawful, threatening, or intended to harass. Do not use the board to advertise or to collect other members’ details for any purpose of your own.

What is said here is for the people here. Do not republish other members’ posts or photographs elsewhere without asking them.

Moderation

A moderator can hide any post, close any thread, and remove any member. They do not have to explain first, though they usually will.

Nothing is ever really deleted straight away. Removed posts are hidden and can be brought back, so a mistake is always recoverable.

You can remove your own posts and threads at any time. That hides them from other members. If you want something erased entirely rather than hidden, ask a moderator.

What we keep about you

Your email address, so you can sign in. Your name and anything else you put on your profile. Your posts, your photographs, and a record of moderator decisions.

Your email address is never shown to other members. Your name, years, subject and picture are.

If you leave, ask a moderator what you want done with what you wrote. We will remove it if you ask.

Pictures made by computer

Wapping Street may later offer to illustrate a memory you have no photograph of, or to repair a damaged old photograph.

Anything made that way will always be labelled as an illustration, clearly and permanently. This board is for remembering what actually happened, and a picture that was invented must never be mistaken for one that was taken.

Money

Wapping Street is free to use today. Some parts may cost money later, and if that happens you will be told plainly before anything is charged.

Nothing you have already posted will be put behind a payment.

What we do not promise

This board is run by two people as a labour of love, not by a company with staff. It may be unavailable sometimes. It may lose things.

Keep your own copy of any photograph that matters to you. Do not treat this as the only place your memories are stored.

Changes

These terms may change. If they change in a way that matters, you will be told on the board rather than quietly.

Asking about any of this

Ask a moderator. They are members like you, and they read everything.
